Gill: Back-to-Back Away Wins Showed Squad's Character
Friday, 8th Nov 2019 14:59

First-team coach Matt Gill has praised the Blues for the way they bounced back from their brief dip in form to win two away games on the spin and believes there’s plenty more to come from the squad in the weeks and months to come.

Town were unbeaten in League One until 2-0 defeats at Accrington and at home to Rotherham but responded by winning 3-1 at Southend and then 1-0 at Rochdale on Tuesday to return to the top of the table.

While the season has started as well as anyone could have hoped, Gill believes there is plenty more to come from the Blues.

“Very much so,” he insisted. “We’re 15 games in, coming off the back of two away wins after a little bit of a dip I just think shows how much character this squad’s got, a resilience to go away from home [and win twice]. No game in this league’s going to be easy away from home, or at home.

“I think we’ve found that teams are raising their game against us, we’re there to be shot at.

“I’ve mentioned the ‘motivational stamina’ before, the lads have to be at that standard every single week and no dips because people will raise their games against us and that’s why they deserve so much credit at the moment for being so consistent in their approach, their workrate and performance.

“The two away games just reiterated what a good group of lads they are, to go away to Rochdale and grind out a 1-0 win. All credit to them and that needs to continue throughout this season, whether it’s 50 games, 60 games, whatever it might be. That approach needs to be the same week in, week out.

“We’ve not got the ability of some other clubs to just raise it now and again. We’ve got to be at it every single week because we know the opposition will be.”

Gill had praise for the squad’s senior men, skipper Luke Chambers and vice-captain Cole Skuse.

“Outstanding, along with the vast majority of the squad,” he continued. “When called upon, every single player has done great this year.

“I mentioned earlier about being ready, making sure they’re motivated to train properly every day even if they’re not playing on a Saturday because you never know when you’re called upon.

“That group of players deserve loads and loads of credit for how they’ve been and those two are among a number that set the standard.

“I think that it’s a really good place to be in. It needs to continue and obviously there’ll be changes throughout the season regarding personnel and who plays and who doesn’t and who comes on and supports. There’ll be loads of changes but those boys deserve loads of credit.”

He added: “I think that at opposite ends of the spectrum you’ve got young lads who haven’t got a care in the world that just want to go and play and have got no fear.

“You’ve got other lads that have been there and done it, had disappointments, had good times, so I think there’s a really healthy mix within the squad, which I think is good.

“You need that within an environment in a dressing room, to have different voices, to have different experiences, young lads are now getting exposed to being shot at. It’s a good environment for everyone at the minute.”

A very well done to Matt Gill along with Paul Lambert's other supporting Management team.
Matt's work is evidently reaping reward and long may that continue.
