West Brom defender ’emotional’ after opening his goalscoring account

West Brom defender Semi Ajayi admitted he was ‘emotional’ after opening his goalscoring account for the club as reported on their official website.

Ajayi scored the equalising goal at Craven Cottage as the Baggies came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with Fulham on Saturday and he described it as an ‘amazing feeling’ as he ran towards the buoyant Albion fans.

The Nigerian helped West Brom remain unbeaten in the Championship with his first goal for the club and he was delighted to help the team at the other end of the pitch.

“I’m absolutely delighted to score my first goal. It’s been a long time coming. To get it in front of the away fans near the end of the game was a great feeling, but more importantly it has kept our unbeaten run going.”

“Any goal is a good goal for me, including the tap-in today. I’m just really happy to open my account for Albion. It was an amazing feeling to run towards the away end and I lost myself for about five seconds after scoring.”

“But then I remembered that we could actually go on to win the game so I ran back up the other end and got back in shape as quickly as I could.”

“I’m delighted that we are still unbeaten. We may not have been at our best today but we are showing that we can ride those waves and come back stronger.”

Ajayi had been on international duty with his country prior to the Fulham game but ensured he was in good shape for when he returned.

“I feel really good. I made sure I got my body in the best possible shape to be able to play. I had a good performance for Nigeria on Tuesday and I was able to take that into the Fulham game.”

Obtaining the big centre back from Rotherham for a measly £1.5million now appears to be fantastic business by West Brom. At just 25-years-old, he is maturing and proving to already be a valuable asset to the Baggies backline.
