Rotherham Boss: Emmanuel Move Unlikely But Not Impossible
Sunday, 1st Sep 2019 17:26

Rotherham boss Paul Warne says it’s unlikely but not impossible that his side could make a loan move for Blues right-back Josh Emmanuel ahead of Monday’s 5pm transfer deadline.

Emmanuel, 22, spent 2017/18 on loan with the Millers, carrying off their Young Player of the Year award as they won promotion from League One to the Championship via the play-offs.

Warne, whose side are 13th in League One, says he spoke to the Blues about Emmanuel, who is currently behind Kane Vincent-Young and Janoi Donacien for the right-back role at Town, in the close season.

"We made contact with Ipswich over the summer about Josh but he was never available," Warne told the Rotherham Advertiser following yesterday’s 1-1 home draw with Tranmere. "They wanted to keep him in.

"I'm not saying it's not possible. Obviously, I've had a relationship with Josh in the past. I know him really well. I think he's, like, fourth choice at Ipswich now. I'll be having a chat with [head of talent ID] Rob [Scott] tonight and we'll see what we think.”

He added: Josh might become available but, as I sit here now, I don't think it will happen.

"We've got [left-back] Trevor [Clarke] out so out of four full-backs we've got two out. Ideally, I wouldn't want to carry five full-backs. But it's a long season. If I was to bring in a right-back, Josh would be high on my list.”

Emmanuel, who spent last season on loan at Shrewsbury and is out of contract with the Blues next summer, has made one appearance for Town this season, in the Carabao Cup tie at Luton.

Aside from fringe players such as Emmanuel and Jordan Roberts going out on loan it's expected to be a quiet final day of the window at Portman Road.

would be a good move for josh, but not for us. rotherham could be our challengers, we shouldn't be helping them!

Agree Pos. Josh can still come good although with KVY in front of him he needs to come on leaps and bounds. If Kane got Injured though then we need the cover and it's Josh and Donacian competing for the spot then.

If we went up I'd happily let him go get games in L1 next year but not this. Rather see the right players get out on the right loans

I wouldn't have an issue with this at all. Happy for him to go and get game time there.

As unpopular as it might be I would push for it to be permanent. He's not going to get in our first team i'm afraid and the boy needs to go and have a career somewhere. It's just one of those best for all parties situations.

Rather keep Josh and send donacien out (preferably permanently ).

Why did we trigger Emmanuel's contract extension when Lambert doesn't rate him at all & it doesn't like he could attract a transfer fee? Let him go on a free & maybe he can establish himself as a regular in League 1 or 2. At aged 22 & with over 60 league starts under his belt, he shouldn't be festering in our U23 team.

Fully agree Terry Nutkins. It's looking like he won't get a look in with us. He has played under different managers and none of them were/are totally convinced by him.

I've got to be honest he doesn't look like he has pushed on to me. This may be partly down to lack of opportunities for us.
If he left for Roth and then ended up elsewhere it wouldn't be a shock to see him do well with career.
Sadly not likely with us. In a similar manner I could see dozzell doing better elsewhere

@Radlett_blue Well at the time we didn't have cover or other options. The arrival of KVY changes the equation.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look as if Josh has a future with ITFC. Strange, because he apparently did well at Rotherham, but none of the managers he has played under with us seem to have rated him all that highly. He won't develop as third or fourth choice with us, so I hope he gets a chance to establish himself somewhere else. Pity we can't get small fee.

You can't say he hasn't had his chances here at times he looks quite casual and clumsy and if anything his career has gone backwards when he first came into the side he looked quite lean and quick but seems to have put on extra muscle which appears to make him look slow and cumbersome looks more like a boxer to me think he needs to move on and prove us all wrong.
