West Brom on verge of £1.5 million move for League One man

West Brom are closing in on the signing of Rotherham United’s Semi Ajayi.

The Baggies have agreed a fee in the region of £1.5 million for the Millers’ defender and are hoping to tie up the deal this week, according to a report by the Express and Star.

Ajayi, who can also play in midfield, impressed last season for Rotherham in the Championship despite their relegation to League One and has been a man in-demand so far this summer with the likes of Barnsley and Leeds linked.

West Brom boss Slaven Bilic is eager to bring in some players before the start of the season and is set to bolster his ranks by landing the 6ft 4inc man.

Ajayi, who is a Nigeria international with five caps to his name, scored eight goals in 49 appearances for Paul Warne’s Rotherham in the last campaign, having scored five the season prior to help them gain promotion to the second tier.

He started his career at Charlton Athletic and progressed through the youth ranks at the Valley. He had a brief loan stint at Dartford before he was snapped up by Arsenal as a youngster in 2013.

Ajayi never made a senior appearance for the Gunners and left for Cardiff City two years later. He had loan spells away at AFC Wimbledon and Crewe Alexandra before Rotherham signed him two years ago.

It is expected to be a busy week ahead at the Hawthorns with Albion are looking to conclude a deal for Cardiff City striker Kenneth Zohore.
