Salford City after experienced Bolton defender

EFL newboys and Class of ’92 backed Salford City are making an audacious move to bring in David Wheater from Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer, according to The Sun‘s Alan Nixon.

Wheater had been on trial at Scottish Premiership outfit Kilmarnock, but according to Marc Iles (Chief football writer at The Bolton News), the move is now off as the defender is moving elsewhere “closer to home”.

The 32 year old made 33 appearances for Bolton Wanderers in the Championship last season, and was an integral part of their promotion winning squad from League One during the 2016-2017 season forming a formidable partnership at the back with Mark Beevers in a season where they gained automatic promotion under Phil Parkinson, finishing 2nd.

Wheater would bring an unbelievable amount of experience to the Salford City side, who are aiming for 3 consecutive promotions after promotion from the National League last season via the playoffs, defeating AFC Fylde 3-0 in the promotion final at Wembley.

This transfer would serve as another example of Salford flexing their financial guns in a summer where they have already brought in Richie Towell, who also played in the Championship last season on loan at Rotherham from Brighton. Salford have notoriously splashed the cash in the past, with the likes of Adam Rooney coming into the then National League club despite being a first team regular at Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen, and is rumoured to be on around £4,000 a week at the Peninsula Stadium.
