Lambert: Quaner, Pennington, Downes and Gerken Could Return
Thursday, 14th Mar 2019 16:53

Town boss Paul Lambert hopes to have Collin Quaner, Matthew Pennington, Flynn Downes and Dean Gerken available for Saturday’s home game against Nottingham Forest but the match is likely to come too soon for James Collins, who has been out with a calf injury.

“There’s a few lads trained this morning,” he said. “Matty trained this morning, so we’ll see how he does tomorrow. Again, he had the sickness bug.

“James Collins trained this morning, we’ll see how he is. He’s not done too much, James, so this one might be a little bit early for him. I think the international break will help him but at least he’s back training.

“I think Flynn Downes was suffering a little bit this morning but is getting better. Deano was ill, he felt better this morning, so he trained. Again, we’ll see how he is tomorrow.”

Striker Quaner was substituted at half-time in last week’s draw at West Brom and missed the trip to Bristol City but the on-loan Huddersfield man could be involved against the Tricky Trees.

“A little strain, a little problem with his knee,” the Blues boss said. “He trained this morning and then hopefully he’s OK.”

He added: “The illness and injuries are certainly getting better. Up until now, we’ll see how they are tomorrow.

“[We’ve no new problems], not from the other day. One or two tired legs and stiffness but that will be away.”

Regarding Jonas Knudsen’s absence at Bristol City he says it was more down to freshening the team up than leaving the Dane out due to the Dane’s expected departure in the summer.

“Jonas, we freshened it up with Toto, which is fine, and he’s out of contract,” he said. “That’s why I did it.

“It wasn’t just about Jonas not playing, I gave other lads a break for other reasons, including injury or through little other things, that was the reason.”

Regarding those out longer term, Lambert says striker Will Keane is still a little way off a return.

“Will’s a good wee bit away,” he said. “I think the international break will help him, missing the two weeks and obviously he misses the Hull game anyway and we’ll see how he is after that.”

The Town manager dismissed suggestions that Emyr Huws should be written off for the season having not played since December 2017 due to a knee injury and having suffered a setback when he picked up a calf problem more recently.

“No, Emyr trained this morning,” he revealed. “You’ve got to remember you just can’t throw somebody in. I know I put him on the bench against Rotherham but you just can’t throw him in, you’ve got to watch that he doesn’t break down again.

“The bigger picture is that he can’t break down again, so we’ll just kind of nurture him through it.”

Tom Adeyemi, who has been out since pre-season with an achilles injury, is still some way off a return to action.

“Tom’s doing well, that kid, but he’s still a long way away, he’s not even trained with us, he’s a long way away.”

Jack Lankester remains out with a back injury, while Grant Ward (ACL), Freddie Sears (ACL), Ben Morris (ACL) and Ben Folami (achilles) have all been ruled out for the rest of the season.

After last nights results we are as good as down now. There is zero point of playing those that won't be or don't want to be here next season. Pennington is an exception as he has been very good. But Quaner is very poor, Gerkens contract expiring and hasn't really performed, so little point selecting either. Nor the likes of Elder, Knutsen etc.

heathen66, I like the look of that team, with perhaps Bishop also pushing for a start?

Almost an oxy-moron that!

In the words to the Andrea Botchelli song, Time to say goodbye"

Would be great to see Emyr back, but we need to trim things down as much as possible, he would be a great player in league 1, but if not playing he needs to hear the Botchelli song! I think and hope some others will hear the song too!

Heathen66, when you say future if you mean next season then Trev and Pennington probably won't be here...

Keep Nolan in and replace Trev with Bishop.
Replace Pennington with Woolfenden

Harrison & Jackson ? yet to prove themselves IMO, think we will need someone who can really do the business, Lack of goals has been our downfall this season, we havnt been thrashed but have not been able to score.

Midastouch - I hope you're right & therefore I will wake up one day like Pam Ewing & realise that this season has just been an awful dream.
